A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
