Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
